DSL Project

Ohio School Districts have been collecting massive amounts of data since 1991, the first mandated EMIS reporting cycle. Up until now the data has been collected and accuracy refined over the years but no mechanism to store and access the data from one central source had been developed until now. DSL, Data for Student Learning, provides a secure, reliable, flexible, and efficient means for accessing data and enhancing classroom and administrative applications for the benefit of student achievement at the local level as well as statewide.

Teachers will now have the ability to better monitor student profiles, progress, and instructional needs with an easy to use web interface. Easy to understand graphs, created by DSL's reporting features, will give District administrators the ability to make informed decisions to improve student instruction. Reports such as district wide attendance and student proficiency results are just a couple examples of the data that be viewed with DSL. Currently Data for Student Learning is available in a read-only format, but templates for the Web access, analysis, and graphical reporting are being developed.

Here at NEOnet, Chris Zolla and Paulette Gansel have been setting up the technical side of Data for Student Learning Project since July 2001, along with Neal Strefeler, Barb Couch, and Mary Dolis providing assistance with the student information. Training for each district appointed DSL administrator began in late July in preparation for the release of DSL in the beginning of the 2001/2002 school year. If you are interested in learning more about and /or using DSL, please contact your DSL Administrator in your school district.
