 Keynote

  • Educating the Mobile Generation:
It is Inevitable that Cellphone Computers will be Used in K-12

    Elliot Soloway,
Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, University of Michigan

  • Teaching 21st century skills in K-12 requires the use of 21st century tools. The cellphone computer – not the laptop – is the quintessential 21st century tool.  Today’s youth already know this fact: for them, the cellphone is an essential tool in their lives – outside of school. Rather than banning cellphone computers from school – and recall, banning books didn’t work either – we need to integrate that tool  into the curriculum.  In our presentation, we will describe how school districts all around the world are embracing cellphone technology and using it for curricular purposes all day, every day - for in school learning activities and for out of school learning opportunities. We will also address concerns that have been voiced (small screen, cheating potential, etc.) – but turn out to be non-problems. It is inevitable that cellphone computers will play a major role in educating our children; we who are responsible for educating America’s children need to recognize the truth of that statement – sooner than later.

Elliot Soloway is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor with appointments in the Dept of EECS, College of Engineering, the School of Education, and the School of Information, at the University of Michigan.  For the past 10 years, Elliot has been exploring how mobile computing technologies can be effectively used in K-12 classrooms. In 2001, the undergraduates at the University of Michigan selected him to receive the “Golden Apple Award” as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year.  In 2004, the EECS College of Engineering HKN Honor Society awarded Elliot the “Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award.” Elliot is a co-founder and CEO of GoKnow Learning, Inc.
